In retrospct, I now see how John Lennon's quote "Life is what happens while you're making other plans." applies to me.
I spent 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, five years in retail (customer service), and 13 years as a computer hardware tech. My training is in Art Education (BA), public affairs (Coast Guard), computer graphic arts (self taught with programs used at work and home) and computer hardware (self taught with a lot of help from co-workers and mistakes).
While all this has been going on with me I've been blessed with a wonderful wife for 30-plus years and two kids.
And now, web design.
Last year I took on the task of recreating a web site for a non-profit I work with using a wysiwyg program. I enjoyed that so much I decided I'd like to learn how to do it correctly, either for my next career or as a serious hobby.
Sam Keen in his book "Hymn to an Unknown God" talks about going to the edge of the "I don't knowp I've been there many times. It's not very comfortable, but it's very exciting.
